ITF vs WTF = ICTF

http://www.etutaekwondo.org/news/2006/Articles/WTF-ITFMergerisNear.html

I read this article and I think this guy is a moron. It does not matter who is more popular, the bottom line is WTF style is a joke and the ITF style is right behind it. You have to go back to the forms in order to learn the real TKD system. Now with that being said ITF & WTF tuls have great moves, but the sport is dumb looking. I can’t understand why people can’t see that. It is not a martial art sport. It’s just a point sport and it is full of unpractical maneuvers. Sure I know, like one out of ten sport guys can maybe pull those moves off in a real fight, but that amounts to nothing significant. Learn the patterns, and learn them good. I say learn ITF & WTF forms and teach the real systems of TKD. Stop making it out like this is a merger of the sport and not really a political and financial move.

Take note of the ICTF because that is pretty much the best TKD masters still alive walking out on ITF & WTF during the merger. That is where we all should drift to, if not to another art entirely.

  1. Are you serious?!? ICTF...We don't need another dumb sounding style of Taekwondo, two is enough, we don't want to become like karate, where there is like 14 different styles! ok maybe alittle exaggeration but nonetheless True!

I believe that WTF and ITF taekwondo both offer quite alot, both have their differences and audiences, but both are alot of fun.

I myself being a 2nd Dan Instructor teach ITF, but my Roots are from WTF and have competed in WTF Comps.

You can say WTF is a joke all you want, but it is the only style that is the same everywhere you go, and provides international recognition of your grade...

My experience with ITF is that each club is different, and only provide club grading... which i find quite disappointing

    1. I feel like you may miss understand my blog. Don't take offense, unless you just have too, I really respect the WTF. I just don't think the tournament style, although fun, is going to provide a solid future for the sport. Look at the way MMA is taking off and how mainstream viewpoints pertaining to TKD, is that it's weak.

I am of another camp. I think the ITF & WTF forms are what needs to be focused on. I may from time to time express my understanding of how WTF sparing (from viewing perspective) can look down right silly, and impractical. However I also give it credence in the since of spreading the art across the globe.

I believe the forms are the key to TaeKwonDo getting it's fire back. The forms teach our true curriculum not the difference in sparing styles. ITF sparring can irritate me too, as a viewer.

I really hope you can find somethings I say agreeable, as I appreciate your comment, but moreover I hope people see how ridiculous the argument between the two styles are(sparing). Both tend to translate into irrelevance in a MMA match or a street fight, although I understand exceptions.

As far as the ICTF goes; if that many grandmasters are leaving what they are doing to form a new sect, then so be it. It's no different than the rest of TKD history. If you have not checked out the Alex Gillis book please do. Good read, and thanks for keeping your comment clean.
