And Captain America is....Veteran trainer Frank Couzo, from
Best of the Best.
Just kidding! it is Woo Sup Kim out of Winston-Salem.
He
hails from South Korea and was on the Korean Tigers Demonstration Team. They
have some pretty cool stuff, if you don't know them, check them out. I searched
for picture of Woo Sup Kim, other than the one on the article, but came up
short. I’m sure there out there, if you find one post it, he is bound to have
beautiful flying kicks.
peace.
But what there's more!
After posting this news, I was informed by an anonymous comment that this was not an appointment to position. Instead he apparently purchased this spot on the team, either way I'm not too invested in this story and don't by any means wish to discredit Woo Sup Kim, as I don't know him, and find it hard to locate any picture of him doing cool flying kicks. I suppose it's more of an Honorary title/ fundraiser. Below is a quote from the article I sourced.
"Woo Sup Kim, the owner of Tiger Kim's World Class Tae Kwon Do, based in Winston-Salem, said in a news release today that he has been named captain of the U.S. Olympics Taekwondo team."
here is a PDF link that the Anonymous commnter posted.

Informal, yet I saw no direct reference to Woo Sup Kim, maybe that was the point.
For anyone that wants to clarify what they believe might be a dis-truth on this blog, I thank you for reading and partaking, and actually adding to the conversation.
Now with all that being said, when I speak of the "truth" in TKD I am not referencing the many forms of politicism in TKD as a modern sport. I have a general interest in the sport, as I sparred ITF, and WTF styles for years. I like to keep up with what is gong on, if I come a cross an article I find interesting I will post it. To set the record straight though, the "Truth" is the Patterns, the Tuls, the Pawlge of Taeguks, Hyungs or what ever you want to call them. I lean towards the belief that forms must be broken down and understood on the highest level atainable for each practioner. The art is in the forms and I speak of implamenting the moves from the forms into the structor of class work.
That is my main focus in TKD.
Thanks to all my readers.
peace.

You have a piece on Woo Sup Kim, Olympic Team Captain for Taekwondo. If you had checked it out, Mr. Kim, a respected member of the Taekwondo community BOUGHT and HONORARY Team Captain sponsorship. He was not appointed to anything. He, like anyone else, with the right amount of money is Team Captain - Honorary Team Captain.

The link above is a management report from USA Taekwondo, the National Governing Body for Taekwondo. Please note the first two paragraphs where the CEO notes that he is selling Honorary Team Captain. If you also look under Athletes on the USA-Takwondo.us website, there is a selection procedure for the support staff for the Olympics. You will note that there is no official Team Captain. All Support staff positions must be approved by the US Olympic Committee. This is a fundraiser for USA Taekwondo who is under probation by the USOC and is in dire need of money.
It is a shame that this master has abused his donation in such a way. He claims in another article that hundreds of Master recommended him for this position. There is no position it is a fundraiser and only Honorary at that.
ReplyDeleteHe should be ashamed of him self!
There is NO TruthIn Taekwondo in this story!
ReplyDeleteAt a Town Hall meeting at USAT Nationals, CEO Eric Parthen says he sold 5 honorary Team Captain positions to donors. The key word here is honoray.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, thanks for the information. I appreciate you adding some truth to this story. I wish you would not be so Anonymous, you're keeping people educated here!

ReplyDeleteYou can find stories on this on ladytkd.com tkdtoday.999.org and on the Recoil-TKD facebook page.
ReplyDeleteIf you go to the USAT website http://www2.teamusa.org/USA-Taekwondo/High-Performance/Athlete-Team-Selection-Procedures.aspx and scroll to the Olympic staff selection procedures, you will see there will be two coaches, a team leader who is also an employee, a doctor and a trainer. No Team Captain. The link to the management report makes it clear that the Team Captain positions are honorary and the USAT is selling them for donations. Why would USAT appoint a Team Captain and not put his name anywhere on the USAT site? It is an honorary position that has been given in exchange for donations to 5 individuals. At the Town Hall meeting in Dallas last week, Eric Parthen, USAT CEO, told the few people in attendance that he would have to clarify that issue but that he had sold 5 honorary Olympic Team Captain spots. This is very easy to verify, just contact eric.parthen@usa-taekwondo.us
from the link above - written by Eric Parthen USAT CEO
ReplyDelete"As a result of the aforementioned meetings, Mr. Sun Kang, President Vision USA, and I are partnering in trying to sell some Honorary Olympic Team Captain packages to USAT donors."
Wow, are you the same Anonymous as before? Stop being so anonymous, pick a name or something. You are obviously invested in this story to a very emotional level. I revised my original post, sheesh. Look, I am not as invested in this story as you are. I appreciate you coming to my blog though, it's just...although I visit ladytkd.com every so often we have a different outlook on TKD. I think ladytkd.com is a great site, but we are not the same. I am not going to go to the "TEAM USA coach section" because I don't really care. I have moved past this story. I am a hardcore ITF fighter that transitioned into kick boxing, boxing and now I have taken up fencing. I like TKD the most, but my reformed TKD belief is that the forms teach a hidden art, a savage yet harmonious art. I really like watching the sport and I pass along what I find, but this was not a major focus. I will keep you thoughts in mind.
ReplyDeletePeace.
Thanks for taking the time to discuss that, I feel strongly about this and so really like getting to know more on this kind of field. Do you mind updating your blog post with additional insight? It should be really useful for all of us.
